Interview with Roman Solek, President and CEO of Interson

(From September, 2009 Issue of Physicians Office Resource Guide)

What makes SeeMore USB probes different?
They are the first ultrasound imaging probes that plug directly into the USB port of a laptop, desktop, or netbook. They are so revolutionary that our technology was recognized as one of the top ten innovations of the year by the International Academy of Science.

How are you able to make a probe that plugs into a laptop?
It was not easy. We had to miniaturize all the imaging electronics: the transmitter, receiver, etc, and fit them all into the probe itself. Further, we had to make the unit extremely energy efficient, so it could run off the USB power supply of a laptop and not run the batteries down.

Are probes cleared for sale in the U.S.?
Yes, they are. Interson products are designed, manufactured, and distributed in full accordance with the requirements of FDA’s Quality System Regulations, Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) guidelines, and other international quality system standards. Interson has received FDA 510(K) clearance, is ISO 13485 certified, and has CE Mark for their products. We have distributors throughout the U.S. and internationally, too.

What is Interson’s history?
Interson Corporation has been a leading manufacturer of ultrasound imaging probes since 1989. Our products are designed and manufactured in the U.S.

What is the cost of a SeeMore probe?
Our probes sell for a fraction of the cost of other systems, depending upon type and frequency. And this includes the software, which can be installed on all of the purchaser’s systems without additional cost. As one physician said, when he scanned with SeeMore, “Wow! I can buy five of yours for what one of mine costs!”

What applications do your probes support?
We have abdominal probes for scanning the aorta, liver, kidney, and gall bladder and also for OB scanning and bladder volume; peripheral imaging probes for vascular access and small parts; and endocavity probes for transrectal and transvaginal imaging. We also have veterinary and ophthalmic probes.

Other features?
Our system is a real-time B mode scanner with 256 shades of gray with fully digital interface to laptops or PCs. We have made the user interface very simple to use, with an auto scan mode that allows users to scan, review, store, and print images very easily. We also offer built-in measurements and calculations,
annotations, pointers, cine loop, and zoom…a lot of the features found on higher-end systems.

What about imaging quality?
We think it is important to set user’s expectations. SeeMore is intended for simple, “first look” imaging. Our probes are not meant to replace high-end diagnostic systems. A frequent comment we hear from physicians is: “I’m amazed at how good the image quality is. I can definitely see what I need to see.”

What kind of system do I need to run SeeMore?
Just about any laptop, netbook or desktop that has at least the following:

  • Computer Operating System – Windows 7, XP, Vista, or Mac (running Windows)
  • Minimum processor – 1 GHz or faster
  • Minimum RAM –1 GB or more
  • USB 2.0 port
  • Minimum Display – 1024 X 600 resolution with 32bit color

What’s next?
We get a lot of ideas from our customers…for instance, we are involved in the development of a version of the SeeMore probe that runs on Windows Mobile based SmartPhones, and they may be available in the near future. Stay tuned for some exciting new developments.
